4 Common Window Opening Types: How to Choose the Right Window Style

Window Opening Types

When selecting windows for a building project, the opening type is just as important as the profile and glass configuration. Different window opening types affect ventilation, opening area, space requirements, and practical applications.

For window and door dealers, installers, builders, and project buyers, understanding the characteristics of different opening types can help match the right window solution to specific project requirements.

This article introduces four common window opening types: Awning, Casement, Folding, and Sliding Windows.

1. Awning Windows — Controlled Ventilation

Awning Windows are top-hinged, with the bottom of the sash opening outward. This design provides continuous ventilation while helping to reduce direct rain entering.

Awning Windows are suitable for spaces that require regular ventilation without the need for a large opening, such as bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and garages.

The opening width of Awning Windows is typically controlled to around 750 mm .

In the North American market, triple glazing is commonly used. The additional glass weight places higher demands on sash and hardware load capacity.

In the Australian market, double glazing is commonly used, resulting in a relatively lighter sash.

The actual opening size should be designed according to glass configuration, sash weight, profile structure, and hardware load capacity.

Key Advantage:
Provides continuous ventilation while offering some protection against light rain.

2. Casement Windows — Larger Opening Areas

Casement Windows typically use side hinges, allowing the sash to open either outward or inward. When fully opened, they can provide a large ventilation opening, making them suitable for projects where ventilation and opening area are important considerations.

Outward-opening Casement

An outward-opening Casement opens toward the exterior and does not occupy interior space when opened.

Under the same profile, sealing, and hardware conditions, outward-opening designs generally offer lower performance in certain air tightness, water tightness, and wind resistance aspects compared with inward-opening designs.

Inward-opening Casement

An inward-opening Casement opens toward the interior. When closed, the sash can create effective compression against the sealing system, and under the same system conditions, it generally offers advantages in certain performance aspects.

Because the sash opens into the room, the available interior space needs to be considered. Furniture, curtains, and areas used for daily movement may be affected, so sufficient opening clearance should be allowed during design.

Tilt & Turn — Flexible Dual Opening

Tilt & Turn windows combine two opening functions:

Tilt: The top of the sash tilts inward for everyday ventilation.

Turn: The sash opens fully inward to provide a larger opening area. This design allows users to switch between everyday ventilation and full opening according to different needs, while also making the glass easier to clean from inside the building.

Compared with outward-opening Casement windows, Tilt & Turn windows require some interior clearance when opened. Furniture, curtains, and circulation areas should therefore be considered during product selection and space planning.

Key Advantage:
Casement Windows provide a large opening area, while different opening directions can be selected according to project space conditions and performance requirements.

3. Folding Windows — Creating an Open Space

Folding Windows can be designed with a vertical folding configuration, which is particularly suitable for cafés, restaurants, bars, and other commercial spaces where a stronger connection between indoor and outdoor areas is desired.

The sashes fold upward and can be gathered above the opening. When closed, the window provides enclosure and protection for the interior. When opened, it creates a more open space with a direct outdoor view and increased airflow.

For cafés and similar applications, vertical folding windows can also provide protection from rain when closed, while opening the window creates a more open connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Compared with horizontal folding designs, vertical folding is more practical for these commercial applications because the folded sashes are positioned above the opening, without requiring significant space on either side.
Key Advantage:
Creates an open space while combining rain protection, ventilation, and outdoor views.

4. Sliding Windows — Space-Saving Operation

Sliding Windows move horizontally along tracks, with the sashes remaining within the window frame. They do not require the additional swing clearance needed by inward- or outward-opening windows.

This design is suitable for projects where the area around the window needs to remain clear, particularly where available opening space is limited.

In the North American market, Sliding Windows are commonly used in basements. Their horizontal sliding operation does not occupy interior activity space and is relatively simple to operate.

Key Advantage:Saves opening space and provides simple, convenient operation.

How to Choose the Right Window Opening Type?

Different opening types address different building requirements. When selecting a window style, key considerations include ventilation needs, opening area, available space, sash weight, and the intended use of the building.

Project Requirement

Suitable Opening Type

Continuous ventilation with some protection from light rain

Awning

Larger opening area

Casement

Flexible ventilation and dual opening functions

Tilt & Turn

Creating an open commercial space

Folding

Limited opening space

Sliding

For window and door dealers, installers, builders, and project buyers, selecting the right window type involves more than appearance. It requires consideration of opening size, glass weight, hardware load capacity, space conditions, ventilation requirements, and project application.

There is no single opening type that is suitable for every project. The right solution is one where the window structure, system performance, and building requirements work together effectively.
